Here are some of the most common features that cause problems:
Animations-Can be turned off in the "internet options" of most popular browsers. Don't use too many animations, because it can annoy visitors, but for the most part, everyone can see animations, so don't hesitate to use them.
Video-Most web sites don't use video because of the wide range of video formats, some visitors might not be able to view them. If your site is strictly a video web site, then it's ok to use video, but make sure you have a link where the visitors can download the software to view the video.
Flash-A year ago, I'd be hesitant to tell you this, but for the most part, everyone can, or will be able to view flash soon. Flash is already seen by almost 70% of web users according to StatMarket.com. However, I recommend that you give your visitors a link to download Flash( http://www.macromedia.com ) and create your web site in HTML as well, so everyone can view your site.
Audio-Is handled much like video, too many different formats. Again, if your site is an audio site, then make sure you give visitors the opportunity to get the software to play the audio. Also, remain consistent with your audio file types. Remain with the same format for all of the audio on your site, but you can add like 2-3 different formats for every use of audio in hopes of the visitor being able to play back at least 1 of the 3 types of audio formats.
Java-This may be disabled in many browsers. I would not recommend using very much Java on your web site because many visitors may not be able to view the Java. If you are going to use Java, give detailed instructions on how to enable Java in Internet Explorer and Netscape.
To recap, Flash works with everyone almost, for other features make sure you give visitors the opportunity to view the feature by giving them the link to download the software or instructions to enable the option if it's disabled in their browser. I know everyone wants to show off their technology, but make sure your visitors can enjoy it too.
