1. How did you start your online business? I started another Web-based service and wanted to add a community message board that provided all of the rich features I had grown accustomed to during my high school and college days as a BBS operator and user. When I searched all of the available community-building tools, I saw nothing on the market that met my needs, so I wrote my own application. That was how ezboard got started as a free, remotely hosted "create your own" online community service.
2. How does your business help webmasters? In general, community building applications provide a great vehicle to add a human component to any web site, by providing the means for customers, suppliers, friends and others to "connect" and build relationships. Community members create fresh, dynamic content and generate valuable ideas and feedback. ezboard takes this concept to the next level by providing the most customizable community application on the market, with seamless integration to any web site and outstanding customer support.
3. How did you go about promoting your web site? Mostly by planting some seeds about ezboard in existing online gathering places and then watching them grow by word-of-mouth. Most of our new users are referred by an existing user, which is the best way to attract loyal customers and a great testimonial about the value and fun offered by ezboard.
4. When did you start your business? I started in late 1998 and got initial seed funding from angel investors to buy web servers and hire the initial team in mid 1999.
5. How has your business grown? Like a rocket ship. We've almost doubled our user base and traffic every two months since inception. ezboard will reach 100 million page views in April 2000, which ranks us among the top 250 U.S. web sites. We have nearly 1,000,000 unique users per month and are one of the stickiest sites on the Web, based on page views and hours per unique user.
6. Do you have any tips for webmasters? Definitely add community to your site and make sure you work hard to nurture your community. Focus on providing users with a worthwhile experience that keeps them coming back to your site and telling others about it.
7. Do you have any other comments? Work like you don't need the money, love like you've never been hurt and dance like no one is watching.
