1. Pick related merchants. If you have a site about sports, don't join a affiliate program that sells toys. The more related the topic is the more click-throughs and sales, which result in more money!
2. Select merchants by how they pay you.
Pay by impression is the best because you don't have to produce click-throughs or sales, just simply show the ad to as many people as possible, however this is very rare for an affiliate program.
Pay by click is the second best way to profit from an affiliate program, you don't have to sell anything, just have your visitors click the ads. For this type of pay you need to make sure you affiliates ads match the content of your web site.
Pay by commission this is not a good arrangement unless you get allot of traffic. Just think about how many people click the merchants ad, and that divide that by at least ten, to determine the number of sales, and then remember you may only get a couple bucks commission from a $40 item that was sold.

Placing affiliate ads can be difficult, you don't want to over crowd you pages with ads, but need to display them to your visitors. You may try some text links, often they have a much better click-through rate. Also they don't take up very much room. One of the very best ways to sell products, or produce click-throughs is by recommending specific products to your visitors. Tell them how much you enjoyed it, and that it may help them too. This should help you out a little, but be careful, don't recommend too many things at the same time or you may lose creditability.
